Dentures & Partials An Overview

Types of Dentures

Dentures are custom made artificial teeth used to replace missing teeth. Although dentures have long been a removable appliance, today’s patients can enjoy the benefits of fixed dentures including a secure smile, a varied diet and normal speech. Dr. Pop will work with you to determine the best option for your overall health and cosmetic concerns.

Partial Denture: Similar to a dental bridge, a partial can be used to replace several consecutive missing teeth. They can be fixed or permanently secured with dental implants.

Full Dentures: Full Dentures are used to replace the entire upper or lower arch of teeth, or both arches. Although removable dentures have come a long way and offer beautiful results with quality materials, Dr. Pop will recommend choosing implants for the most stable, healthy result.

Implant Dentures: All-on-4 dental implants, sometimes called denture implants, permanently attach dentures to the jaw using strategically placed dental implants. Dental implant secured dentures provide the highest rate of patient satisfaction.

What Are the Benefits of Implant Secured Dentures?

Dr. Pop can place dental implants to permanently secure your new cosmetic denture or partial denture for superior results when compared to traditional dentures. This is accomplished with a procedure known as All-on-4® and provides several key benefits for both overall health and lifestyle:

  • Reduce bone loss and shrinkage in the jaw
  • No slipping or fear of teeth falling out
  • Enables a healthy, varied diet
  • Normal speech for confidence in social settings
  • No need for the use of daily adhesives

Dentures & Partials What to Expect

The process for placing a denture or partial denture will begin with a consultation and evaluation of the condition of your dental health. Dr. Pop will take into consideration all aspects of your smile, including the function of your bite, gum health, existing teeth and overall facial structure and appearance. The best possible result relies on a comprehensive approach to treatment planning.

If periodontal treatment or tooth extractions are needed, these will be taken care of first and we will work with you to establish a stable and healthy foundation for the next steps.

If dental implants are being placed to secure your denture or partial, Dr. Pop will schedule the surgical implantation of the post as the first step towards your new smile. This will require a healing period of several months during which a temporary may be placed.

The final restoration will be placed once all tissues have healed, using a new set of dental impressions that take into consideration the changes to your gums that can occur after tooth extraction and the use of a temporary denture.

Dr. Pop will place the denture and make sure the fit is stable, comfortable and will support a healthy bite. During routine dental visits, we will monitor the fit of your denture and the health of your gums and soft tissues. Adjustments may need to be made over time to avoid irritation of the gums and other concerns.
